The cape is one of the most durable house forms in northern New England, and Chittenden County has a deep stock of it. The classic shape is a story and a half under a steep gable roof with a centered entry, dormers on the upper level and the eaves close to the second floor windows. Early examples stand in the village centers of Charlotte, Shelburne, Jericho and Richmond, while the larger group came with the postwar build-out in Colchester, Essex, Winooski and South Burlington. Many have since been expanded to the rear. Brian French Real Estate knows how these houses were built and where the good ones sit. Compare single-level plans on the single level homes page.
